April Newsletter

Happy Spring! We all know that this past winter was certainly a long one and I for

one am very happy it is coming to an end. I look forward to shedding the winter gear and jumping into my pastimes of summer events.

ND EMS certainly had a busy winter and I for one am proud of the work completed in the harsh ND winters. The weather certainly was not kind as we dealt with weeks of sub-zero temperatures and yet ND EMS continued to do their due diligence and take care of people.

At a recent National EMS Conference, I met with leaders of other State EMS Associations from other states such as in Utah, and Oklahoma. While at this conference I heard things like, “Oh my gosh it has been so cold!” “It’s hard to take care of patients in these conditions.” I would pull out my phone and check the weather. Hmmm 39 degrees. I would joke with them and say wow that’s harsh. Here is the temp back home, only to show them the -19 degrees with the real feel of -39 degrees. I would enjoy the ever dropping of the jaw and the look of disbelief on their faces. That look and the thought of the crews out doing what you do really gave me a huge sense of admiration and pride to be part of ND EMS.

With all of this said, please be cognizant of the idea that the Mother Nature could still rear her ugly head and hit us with another cold snap. So remain diligent with your patients, yourselves, and your gear.

April is upon us which means its Conference Time!!! This year is the 44th Rendezvous and it is shaping up to be yet another awesome conference. I am excited to see all of you at the conference.

A couple of other reminders, The ND EMS Foundation has two big fund raisers going on this summer. The 1st annual Dale Severson Golf Scramble in Cooperstown, ND and the 2nd Annual Tom Nerhing Walleye Tournament in Van Hook on Lake Sakakawea. Check the website for dates and registrations.

In closing I will reiterate thank you for all that you do for ND EMS. As always, stay safe and do good things!

A Great Start Makes All the Difference

You want your managers to be effective leaders and successful from the start. But sometimes, we find managers struggling and their teams’ morale is declining. Soon enough, you start realizing that high-performing employees promoted into management lack the skills to be effective managers, which requires a different skillset.

Managers who receive the necessary tools and training are set up to become leaders who create engaged productive teams, and drive greater results for your organization.

This 6-hour face-to-face workshop teaches participants the following key concepts:

· Manager Mindset – learn the mindset required for a successful transition from individual contributor to manager

· Four Conversations Model – learn a highly effective framework for understanding the conversations needed to manage people and  performance

· Four Essential Skills – learn how to have purposeful conversations that create positive, productive relationships

Following the workshop, participants have access to the First-time Manager Challenge, which guides them through a set of tasks to practice new skills back on the job and access to workshop videos and worksheets through the learner portal for a full year.

Who Should Attend

· First-time and established managers, and those considering a   transition into management

· New managers wanting to increase their leadership effectiveness

· Mid-level or new managers or supervisors

Made Possible By

A grant through the Center for Rural Health Flex Program with administrative support by NDEMSA has significantly lowered the cost of this training.  The typical fee is $349.
